They drove in silence.

The rain came down hard, the Thunderbird’s wipers struggling to keep up. Charlie looked at her hands. They were covered in blood. It had dried to her skin, and now cracked as she clenched and unclenched her fists. The front of her sweater and skirt were coated in a mixture of blood and vomit. She wound down the window and leaned her head out, letting the raindrops pound against her face.

They had left before the cops arrived, sneaking out amidst the chaos. The film was still playing as they drove away, though word was spreading through the audience that someone had died.

Lynette slowed the car as they came to the lights on the edge of town. The engine idled, purring contentedly. Charlie noticed Lynette’s knuckles were white as she gripped the wheel, the tension causing her forearms to vibrate soundlessly. Charlie touched her, and she flinched. They looked at each other, neither sure what to say. It was Lynette who broke the silence.

“Want me to take you home?”

Charlie shook her head.

The lights turned green.

“Want to come back to mine?”

Charlie nodded.

Despite the minty gum she chewed on, her throat was dry, so she opened her mouth and let the rain in. The droplets wet her tongue, and she closed her eyes as the car moved again, her hair trailing behind her in the wind.
